As the pet food market continues to shift toward natural and less processed products, ingredient innovation plays a key role in helping brands develop relevant and high-performance recipes.
Limagrain Ingredients is expanding its PRESCO range with a new addition: Presco Yellow Pea – a clean-label, grain-free ingredient designed specifically for cold-pressed and other low-temperature pet food applications.
Presco Yellow Pea is produced using our unique PRESCO (for PRESsure-COoking) technology, which ensures pre-gelatinised starch with stable cold viscosity. This makes it particularly suitable for low-processed pet food formats, such as cold-pressed kibble, where traditional starches may fall short in binding or digestibility.
Presco Yellow Pea offers more than just functionality.
Highly digestible: The PRESCO process improves nutrient availability and reduces anti-nutritional factors (trypsin inhibitors <0.5 mg/g), contributing to better gut health.
Balanced nutrition: With around 22% crude protein and a fibre-rich profile, it supports muscle maintenance, satiety, and digestive function.
A suitable alternative to animal derivatives in vegetarian, vegan, or flexitarian recipes. It pairs well with cereals in the PRESCO range to build more complete amino acid profiles.
Improved palatability: PRESCO treatment reduces the typical beany and bitter notes associated with pulses, enhancing taste and aroma.
Grain-free & Clean-label: Made from 100% yellow pea – no additives, non-GMO, allergen-friendly, and naturally grain-free.
Cost-effective: Offers similar technical benefits to extruded pea flours, often at a more competitive cost.
Sustainable: Lower carbon footprint than animal proteins and imported starches, sourced locally in Northern Europe to reduce transport emissions.
Presco Yellow Pea can be included at up to 20% of the total formulation. It provides good binding capacity and contributes to the overall structure of cold-pressed kibbles and other low-temperature processed products. It can also be used to partially substitute animal protein sources depending on the nutritional targets.
While the use of pulses in pet food has raised some questions, especially concerning canine DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy), current scientific evidence does not confirm a direct link. Formulation balance, processing, and ingredient quality remain key factors. Using pre-cooked pulses like Presco Yellow Pea helps minimize risk by improving digestibility and nutrient uptake.
